Radon in Schools & Large Buildings

Radon testing in schools and large buildings differs from radon testing in homes because more detectors have to be used to obtain accurate radon readings due to the larger area being surveyed.

Each radon detector placed can cover an area of approximately 2000 square feet. This is important because some conference rooms, cafeterias, and gymnasiums can be larger than 2000 sqft, which is going to require more than one detector to be placed in that room. All rooms that are occupied regularly and are in direct contact with the ground, or have a crawlspace underneath it, need to be tested for radon. Closets, storage rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms not routinely occupied are not to be tested.

Testing should be done in the cooler months of the year because usually windows are closed and the heating system is turned on, which would closely mimic closed-building conditions and represent a worst case scenario. Radon testing should not be performed over weekends and holidays because the building conditions are usually not the same as they would be during “normal” business hours.

If you have any questions, please contact your state’s radon department, or call 1-800-220-3675 to speak with EMSL Analytical’s Radon Specialist.
